As a guy who is just starting my journey in pickup, I was quite curious to what tips Landon had to offer after listening to his interview on the DSR podcast. Being a fitness competitor myself (in the category of men's physique), and about 17 years of weight lifting experience + a former elite athlete of American football on a European allstar level - I consider myself to have a deep base of knowledge and experience in the field of nutrition and exercise. Since the book was only about 8$ or so I figured I would have a go!
Here is my honest review.
The book is build around 10 smaller chapters, each containing a tip about fitness and nutrition that Landon himself finds useful in getting and staying lean. From the amount of stars I have given each category, you might be led to believe that it's not a very good book. But don't get me wrong! There are some good advice in there, especially if you are a beginner. Keep in mind that I'm writing from the standpoint of a guy who already has mastered this part of his life and perhaps was expecting some more depth.
Effectiveness:
I found the content to be quite good. If you are just starting to work out and need some pointers in the right direction, you will find some good advice here. The main reason I didn't give this category more than 5 stars is that the advice is very general and basic. There is no real guide on how to customize it to your own life, if you know what I mean. I like the analogy that Landon makes between nutrition and cars, with different kinds of fuel. On the downside, I really don't agree with some of the claims, based from the standpoint of what the actual research says (mainly the part about having to eat every third hour). It's not that it doesen't work - there are just much better and easier options (like intermittent fasting).
Ease of implementation:
Would be nice with a more detailed chapter on how to set up your own program and how to calculate your requirements etc. It's not difficult at all. No mention of tools like myfitnesspal to track calories.
Innovativeness:
Did I learn something I didn't know? No. Actually some of the advice, like having to eat six times a day is now outdated. Sure it works, but who wants to spend all day in the kitchen planning and making 6 smaller meals when there are better methods.
Packaging and customer service:
Only kindle edition was available, and I don't have kindle. Would have been nice to be able to choose an e-book. Thankfully I could read in online at the amazon store after the purchase.
Value for money:
There are some good tips there, and especially if your new in the fitness game, I could recommend the 8$ to read it. But if you are a bit more experienced, I would definitely recommend Lyle McDonalds work more. His guide to flexible dieteing, for example, is a good read. Lyle's books also have chapters on how to customize and calculate your own requirements.
All in all - a decent read!
