The Good
1. Classroom sessions on days 2 and 3 were good – Badboy is a charismatic tutor with a lot of great ideas. Role-playing exercises in particular were useful. 2. The other 7 students on the course were cool, helpful, supportive guys and I really enjoyed spending the weekend with them.
The Bad
1. The time in the classroom was shorter than advertised. The 2nd and 3rd days began at 2pm instead of 12.30pm, but this was poorly communicated - nobody seemed to know for sure when we were starting. 2. The time in the field was shorter than advertised. Badboy didn’t tell many of us when he was leaving on any of the nights, when a simple text to each of us would have done the job (but he didn’t seem to have our numbers, despite us submitting them by email before the event). On Thursday BB and three of us started the in-field portion early, just after all of us had been for a meal. That was fine for us, but the others who had to go home and change lost out. As far as I could tell, BB left for home about 12 that night (though this wasn’t clear because he never told us when he left any of the nights). On Saturday, we finished our meal around 11 and I didn’t see Badboy at all after that. I was told he left about 1am. 3. There was no guest instructor, as had been advertised. I asked Badboy about this twice and he told me somebody had flaked on him. Not much good to us. BB’s website says of the Small Group Workshop 'We keep the teacher to student ratio tight to offer you the maximum learning time from your instructors'. A ratio of 1:8 doesn't seem tight to me. I think we were all expecting 1:4. 4. Badboy hardly entered a set all weekend. Call me a doubting Thomas, but I have to see to believe. His attitude was “Do as I say, not as I do” 5. Badboy isn’t a good guy who adopts the persona of a bastard to get girls. He really did come across as a bastard. He didn’t have much of an issue when I suggested to him that his method was “bastard direct” as opposed to Juggler’s “nice direct”. My pet theory, which anyone who knows me will be sick of hearing, is that women are most attracted to three types of men – good-looking men, rich men and bastards. Badboy may not be good-looking (I think he is, but nobody seems to agree with me), but if he earns more than $12000 for 3 days work he must be very rich (especially by Croatian standards). Plus, he’s got status – there’s a covershoot of him on a Croatian magazine pictured on his website. People like that don’t need game. 6. The first day’s classroom session was 6.5 hours with no food break. I was f***ing starving! And almost all the material on day 1 was stuff I’d read online. 7.A lot of time in the classroom was taken up by Badboy telling us about all the girls he’d slept with. One of the characters in Italo Calvino’s wonderful book “If On A Winter's Night A Traveller” is a literature student who doesn't actually read books but performs a word frequency analysis on them and gleans their meaning from the results. If you were to do this with Badboy’s stories, you would end up with not much more than “I”, “[had sex]' and “bitches” – and this would tell you all you needed to know. No “making love” to “ladies” for this guru. 8. He didn’t seem all that interested in us other than as customers. I wonder what he calls his students behind their backs - he certainly didn’t seem to be interested in or capable of learning any of our names and he had no list of who was meant to be in the class. He didn’t even notice when one of the students dropped out after the first classroom session. Maybe the most telling moments of all: I asked him whether he would sleep with his friends’ girlfriends given the chance (he thought about it for a while then replied “maybe not close friends!”) and whether if I met him 6 months in the future when I was in a relationship with a HB, he would “[have sex]' [with] her if he got the chance (he again thought about it for a wee while then replied “Maybe not. I know that for you to get a HB it would be a big thing, whereas I can get them all the time!”) 9. Before paying my deposit, everything looked slick. After, everything looked messy. BB somehow missed me off the mailing list for the course details, and I had to chase him up for this. Also, when these did reach me, they talked about the “Munich workshop”, not the London one. Admittedly, this is a minor complaint.
All in all, a disappointing experience. Even with my deposit refunded, it still cost me over $1000. And of course, there are expenses on top of course fees – transport, accommodation and food in another city (I think only 2 of us were from London). The most expensive weekend of my life, by a long way! The only other bootcamps I’ve been on have been with Dr Jekyll and School of Seduction (TomCat, James DeMarco, AFC Adam London and Trigger) – all this autumn. Badboy compares poorly against both of these, on both cost and quality. My game has improved recently, but I put this down more to the sessions with the Jekyll and SoS.
